Being part of the High School...

As part of our practicum, last Friday afternoon, one of my classmates, Carolina Romero, and I went to Liceo Barón in order to decorate the reception room. The prom took place at Liceo Barón that night. Last year students had their last high school celebration, and we decided to help in spite of the fact we are working with first year students. I think it is necessary to feel part of the school.

Encuentro Costumbrista Liceo Baron

Suggestions for one of my classmates

I recognize that I don't feel comfortable giving advise to one of my classmates due to I think I also need to criticized. However, I was asked for advise. After I watched my classmate's lesson I don't want to say the best or the worst I saw. Instead of it I want to give her some links that have suggestions for class using fairy tales, music, and VTS.

Don't give Up

Another Chance

by Helen Steiner Rice

How often we wish for another chance
to make a fresh beginning.
A chance to blot out our mistakes
And change failure into winning.
It does not take a new day
To make a brand new start,
It only takes a deep desire
To try with all our heart.
To live a little better
And to always be forgiving
And to add a little sunshine
To the world in which we're living.
So never give up in despair
And think that you are through,
For there's always a tomorrow
And the hope of starting new.

After I read this poem, I felt as I had written it. The first teaching weeks were very difficult, and I didn't know what to do. However, after I took decissions, I gave my best and had faith. Therefore, I could take another chance, I learned from my mistakes and decided to go on working and discovering new options in order to succeed as a prospective teacher.

If you have lived a similar situation, if you think that there is not an exit and you don't have a new opportunity. You only have to wait, there will always exist another chance to be better and to experience the triumph.

Reflective Writing

Reflective writing Nº1: The Observation Stage

I. Introduction

· What do you think the cartoon provided below is illustrating? Why? Answer briefly.

From my point of view, the cartoon illustrates that people sometimes does not realize about the real and risky situation because they do not observe what happens around. If they observed they would do something about it. I think this illustration represents this because if we read the quotation: “Lets see what’s going on in the world” and we see the atomic bomb outside the window we can find out that it was not necessary to turn on the TV to know that news in order to do something, for instance, to escape from that house.

II. Reflective writing

1. Reflect on the importance of the initial observation period in final practicum.

I think this period was a crucial one due to the information and familiarization that I got from it. If I hadn’t observed the class (specifically “1º medio D”) I wouldn’t have became aware of the student’s background and previous knowledge to start the team teaching stage and my practicum work.

2. Refer to the observed issues in assigned school, and explain if these issues caused a change on the expectations you had about this particular period.

I didn’t know “Liceo Barón” before I was assigned to work there. So, the only information I found on the Internet was the big number of male population that the high school. However, I didn’t have so many expectations about my future work there. Therefore, I didn’t have a change on my expectations. However, I became surprised after I observed the class and I discovered their behavior and their background since I realized that the class had diversity, instead of being a homogeneous group of students with similar hobbies and things that they like.

3. How did you feel? Provide one example you consider most relevant to support your answer.

I felt challenged. The week the observation stage lasted, I realized about my situation, and the new challenges I will face in the practicum. Moreover, I recognized that it was only the first step. I have a long trip that I will walk. I became aware of this new challenge after I observed my guide teacher, the high school and my new students.

Reflection 1

  • Reflect on the effects of the aspects (that were commented last class), and the way you think they can be used to improve the learning conditions in the school.

Fact:

One of the students says: "Teacher, you don't know how to explain"

Teacher behaviour:

He says: "Are you saying that I don't know how to explain?"

Students behavior:

The student continues saying the same. The other students say: "Classmate, shout up".

Result:

The teacher asks the student to go to the Principal officeThe student gets a suspension and .

These weeks have helped me to become aware of the real classroom environment and teacher's job. From my point of view, aspects as the previously one should be treated after class in private. So, student-teacher communication can improve. I don't know if the teacher had a conversation with the student after they had this problem. However, I think the student only needed a new explanation in spite of the fact he wasn't paying attention to the teacher before the situation.

In this case, a student was not respectful due to the tone of voice that he used. But to treat students and teachers with respect can absolutely improve the learning conditions in school.
